Parents and Boda Boda Riders: Through targeted awareness campaigns, 70% of parents and boda boda riders will become aware of the legal requirements for supervised child transport and understand the risks associated with non-compliance.
Development of a Road Safety Culture within Schools Teachers will integrate road safety topics into the curriculum, fostering a culture of safety from a young age and encouraging students to adopt safe habits in and around school zones.
Improved Community Awareness and Reporting Increased engagement between the community and local authorities, including improved channels for reporting unsafe road practices around schools.
A boda boda rider fell while carrying two children under the age of nine to school on the last day of term this December. The rider was trying to escape from a policeman after realizing he was breaking the law by carrying children illegally. The children sustained injuries and are still receiving medical care. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take photos of the victims because their parents were concerned about sharing them with the police.
Another child, under the Ilegal age to be carried on a motorbike, was burned by the exhaust pipe while being taken home from school. Despite the child crying out in pain, the rider didn’t hear because of the helmet and the noise from the wind due to high speed. The child’s parents had to cover medical expenses, and the child missed school for some time.
The project aims to train primary school teachers to protect children from unsafe boda boda transport. Many riders break the law by carrying children under nine years without a guardian when taking them to school.
This increases accident risks and encourages carrying multiple children on one motorbike. The law requires supervision for young children, but many riders ignore this rule.
Through training, teachers will learn to raise awareness among parents and communities and help enforce the law around schools. This project will create a safer transport environment for young children and reduce the dangers of unsafe motorcycle travel to children’s.
This situation encourages a culture where riders see nothing wrong with carrying young children as passengers, even though it is against the law. Many parents and riders may not see the risks because this has become a common, accepted practice
Bodaboda / bajaji workshop
The goal of this project is to protect children from the risk of accidents caused by unsafe boda boda transport. By training primary school teachers, the project will ensure proper supervision of motorcycle transport regulations related to children in schools.
The project seeks to create a rider police database system to monitor and regulate boda boda riders involved in transporting children in schools
Increased Awareness and Compliance with Road Safety Laws At least 90% of participating teachers will gain awareness and understanding of road safety laws, especially those related to child passengers on motorcycles, enabling them to effectively educate students and advocate for safe practices.
